Large Herter's owl decoy. Unlike duck decoys, owl decoys were not used to attract owls, but crows. Farmers with small fields considered crows a nuisance  therefore when crows were drawn in to pester the owl, farmers with guns in hand were waiting. The Herter's Company in Waseca, Minnesota was then what L. L Bean is today, supplying hunters, campers and sportsmen with proper gear. This example remains in very good original condition with glass eyes and bear claw bill. Size: 19 inches tall. Age: about 1940. Inventory number 23PD1030.

$2150.

A very pleasing 18th century oval watercolor memorial of Mr. B. Carlton. The focal point of this work is the willow tree draping the urn with the widow paying tribute standing next to the tomb. It states that he died November 5th 1771. The inscription reads, "The day of the Lord cometh as a thief in the night". Excellent condition. Housed in a relatively modern, 50-75 year old frame and mat. Size: 16 x 12 inches. Inventory number 24PD26.

$1450.

A very fine, well done watercolor portrait of a young gent wearing a blue waistcoat, looking left. The portrait is presented in its original gold frame and mat under historic glass. He is mounted with an acid free material and identified verso as Peter Bartleson, Philadelphia, about 1780. There is no information on the artist except to say personally that he was quite skilled as his work compares to the quality of Rufus Porter.  Size: 8.25 x 7.5 overall. Inventory number 24PD23.

$1650.

Unusually small utensil box in original green paint. We have never seen another of this smaller size. It measures only 10 x 6.5 x 6. c1900. Inventory number 24PD39.

Very unusual early 20th century toleware candle holders. We have seen and sold many pieces of toleware, but never seen any made in this fashion for what I assume is from an old tin can and painted in the style of its 19th century relatives. Each measures  only 3.5 inches in diameter, 2 inches deep. Inventory number 24PD15.

$195. the pair.

Early 20th century handmade and painted "Barber" sign. Executed on masonite with great color and design. Inventory number 23PD965.

Important 18th century writing arm Windsor chair attributed to Col. Ebenezer Tracy, Lisbon, Ct. c1790. A rare and very fine example in a high state of preservation having its original black color and surface undisturbed. The chair is not signed, but displays a well developed form one can easily associate with the Tracy shop. An old stable hairline in its bow is its only flaw and considering age, easily forgivable. 41" tall with a 17.5" seat height. If you've been searching for a "killer" writing arm chair, this outstanding example could very well end your search. Inventory number 23PD664

Sperm whale wall plaque by noted carved Clark Voorhees, 1911-1980, Old Lyme, Connecticut and Weston, Vermont. Small portrait by Percy Sanborn, 1849-1929, Belfast, Maine. One associates Sanborn's work with sailing ships, still lifes and dog and cat paintings, but this very well-done portrait of a very pretty young girl may well be a one of a kind portrait and it's painted on an 11 inch wooden plate as opposed to canvas which most of his works were painted on.  If other portraits exist, we are not aware of them. Signed Sanborn, 1884 or 86 Size: 11 inches in diameter. Inventory number 23PD 586

Very fine pair of New England watercolor silhouettes. Both have similarities to the hand of Ezra Wood (the puffy sleeve artist), but as much as they resemble his work, I'm more comfortable associating them with an unknown hand depicting Miss Boynton on page 51 of "A Loving Likeness" from the collection of Ray and Susan Egan. It isn't too far-fetched to think this artist and Ezra Wood lived near each other and likely knew one another. The pair falls into that upper echelon of silhouette collecting which is intensely sought after by advanced collectors. Each is offered in their original frames under historic glass with each being back with an acid free layer of protection. c1830-35 Size: 4.75 x 6.75
