A skillfully carved and painted Indian head with a full headdress and pleasing, well defined classic facial details. It is my thought this was a tourist trade offering and done in the 1920s. In very nice original condition with no known restoration. Inventory number 25-960.

A 19th century architectural element with a cast relief eagle decor. Made from glazed white clay, which has survived well considering the abuse architectural fragments are subjected to. Its only flaw is a small loss on its left wing which is not obvious or distracting. It has taken on a wonderful toned color and surface and will surely find a place in your home to light up. Size: 17" diameter, 7" deep. It's quite heavy, but shippable. Inventory number 25-995.

A fine relief carved powder horn with a dog chasing a running stag. The name of the owner is H B McCloskey whom we assume was a member of the New Market Militia. It's also dated 1775 with a military encampment symbol. Also note the skillfully carved dog head cap. Excellent condition. Inventory number 26-10.

A very early 19th century hand stitched wool bed rug or quilt. People I've asked say it's a bedrug while others say a quilt. Personally we are thinking bedrug, but whatever, it's beautifully created and remains in excellent condition considering age and use. Yes, there are some very minor moth holes, but nothing that distracts the eye. A meandering leafy vine completely surrounds the entire border with internal squares having multiple stars, birds, and leaves. Size: 68 x 60. Inventory number 25-822.

A fine c1920s appliquéd quilt with a central patriotic eagle theme. A colorful floral border surrounds and frames the quilt which remains in flawless condition. It's quite large measuring 98 x 67. A wonderful make-do pincushion with an embroidered floral cover on a broken oil lamp base. Make-do items reflect a time when broken items were not discarded as they are today, but found a way of being useful once again. Excellent condition. c1900-1910. Inventory number 25-855.

A large, OOB, marine seascape by noted artist, William Columbus Ehrig, American, 1892-1969, Ogunquit, Maine. Ehrig was a member of the Ogunquit School of artists that specialized in southern Maine coastal paintings. A very unusual 20th century sewing purse made with natural woven materials. It always thrills us when we find an item we've never seen before and this purse was no exception. A very unusually small turned and painted barber pole with a decal that reads S.P.B.E.S.Q.S.A. which stands for Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America. We bought this privately from a Maine collector whose brother sang in a barbershop quartet. It measures 19" tall on a 6" diameter base and remains in excellent original condition. Inventory number 25-582.

A pure and classic nostalgic sign right out of the 1940s to '50s. People of my vintage will have fond memories of seeing these series of signs along rural highways across America. An American watercolor portrait miniature of a young gent in profile looking left. Attributed to noted portrait miniature artist, Justus DaLee, 1793-1878, Rochester, NY. It has survived well throughout the years and remains in its original lemon gold frame under historic glass. James Sanford Ellsworth, American,1802-1874, Windsor, Connecticut. Ellsworth used paper rather than ivory when painting his subjects and his signature trait was the stylized cloud he used behind his sitters' heads. He also liked portraying his sitter in fancy stylized chairs. The colors of this very fine example remain bright and vibrant. The frame is original and it measures 6.5 x 5.5 overall. A very rare hollow-cut silhouette with watercolor embellishments of a very young woman wearing a blue puffy sleeve dress. While at first glance it appears to have been done by Ezra Wood, the Puffy Sleeve artist, upon close inspection, there is no convincing evidence connecting it to Wood. On page 51 of A Loving Likeness, you will find another portrait by the same unidentified hand of Miss Boynton, c1830 and like her, this offering rests in its original pressed brass frame under historic glass with an acid free mounting. A Mid-Century Boston Artistic Carving Company eagle with shield. Most patriotic eagle plaques by this company were carved in the style of John Bellemy, which is not a knock, but in this form, in this pose, it's quite different, quite unusual and we think highly desirable. Justus DaLee, 1793-1878, American, Rochester, NY. DaLee's portraits rank high among the upper echelon of early American portrait painters in both quality, execution and detail. His portraits are found in the finest collections and institutions and are highly sought after today. This portrait of Nicholas Bates is a fine example of his work depicting Bates as a younger man. Size: 3.75 x 4.25 overall in its original frame under early historic glass. Excellent condition. Ex. Bryce and Audrey Chase Collection. Inventory number 25-261.

A fine 19th century American OOC portrait of two brothers in very good overall condition. A slight blemish can be seen to the right of the younger child's left arm, but no other flaws or repairs are known. Unfortunately we have no further information on the sitters or the artist. Cut out sheet iron weathervane of a mother cat and her two kittens. Made of heavy gauge sheet iron with directionals all mounted on a modern metal base. Original weathered color and surface. Size: 29T, 17W on a 7" base. c1930-40. Inventory number 25-211.

A smaller sized wooden steering wheel possibly from a smaller sized sailboat. It has a very attractive soft toned color and surface which is further enhanced with a cleverly made custom metal stand. A 19th century sailormade whale bone jagging wheel with a fork. A very impressive design and skillfully carved. These were made by sailors on long journeys as love gifts to sweethearts back home. Size: 7.75" long with a 2.125 " wheel. Inventory number 25-206.

A fine double socket tole decorated lamp in complete and original condition. We have sold several of these lamps over the years, but this example is one of the finest we've ever had the privilege of owning. Doris Stauble, 1927-2006, Wiscasset, Maine. Doris is well known for her floral and fruit arrangements she made using pantry boxes, trencher bowls, dough bowls and anything else she deemed suitable for one of her now famous creations. The arrangements she made from the 50s through the 70s are now found in collections virtually all over the country. She used a featheredged bowl for this creation filling it with a colorful and a very pleasing selection of wax fruit. I think you'll agree it's one of her better arrangements. Size: About 10" in diameter. Inventory number 25-163.

19th century New England portrait on panel of a distinguished gentleman wearing a precisely knotted tie and high collar. He rests in what appears to be its original lemon gold frame which shows some losses along its lower section. I'm sorry, but we have no information about the sitter or of that of the artist. A personal note: The portrait is very well done and some future information may surface about the artist. Very good condition. Size: 32 x 27 overall. Inventory number 24-980.

Large 5 gallon stamped F. B. Norton Company, Worcester, Mass., c1858-1877. Decorated with a bold single parrot surrounded with two leafy branches. While it does have some paint loss, likely from use or mis-use, it still has bright pleasing colors that will make it a stand-out addition to your collection. Hand-tooled 19th century New England maple bowl in the best original red painted color and surface. Every now and then you cross paths with a bowl that simply stops your heart. That was this bowl. Large Highlander whirligig. This is the largest gig we've ever owned and its size dictates a place of importance in your home. It comes with a custom wall mount which shows it off well in place. The paint is weather worn, very dry and original with some possible later paint to its black belt, but a long time ago. A nice open face diorama from the mid century. In last month's update we featured a sister piece to this which was signed and dated, Captain Alfred Dale Hopkins, June 16th,1952, East Orleans, Mass. Extraordinary 19th century densely decorated basket with a fixed handle. One side of the basket is dated 1859 while the other side has initials, presumably those of its owner. Overall condition is very good. The handle has a very slight fracture, but remains quite stable. Its strong colors remain unusually vibrant and true. Size: 11 x 10 x11.75 inches. An exceptional pair of early 19th century marriage portraits. Both remain in very good condition and are housed in their original molded black frames under very wavy historic glass. 19th century oval pantry in THE BEST original red painted surface. This box is in remarkable untouched condition with an unusual single finger lapped lid and a full vertical lapped body. 19th century turned maple mortar and pestle in strong first-surface red color. Condition: Some surface checks, but no cracks or hairlines that penetrate the bowl. While there are no traces of red on its pestle, we believe it's original and shows impressive wear and good in-use surface. Size: The mortar is 8 inches tall, the pestle is 9.25 inches.
