Late 18th or early
19th century lead sunface fire mark. In early times,
insurance companies gave their clients fire marks to be displayed in
a prominent place on their homes. Without this mark, if there was a
fire, local firefighters would simply let the house burn to the
ground. Aren't we glad this policy changed.
I love this form, its color and surface. Size:
7 x 6.75 inches. Very good condition. Inventory number, 24PD80.

A pair of husband and
wife watercolor portraits attributed to Joseph H. Davis, 1811-1865,
the left hand painter, active 1832-1838 in Maine and New Hampshire.
These are lovely examples, but not without issues. There are
knothole stains on the left side of the gentleman plus areas of his
fancy carpet have suffered losses. She has an old paper restoration
on her left side. As far as we can tell, the frames are original.
The good news is a good paper restorer can make all of this go
away. Size: 17 x 13. Inventory number 23PD986.

An American
portrait miniature by James Sanford Ellsworth,1802-1873, Windsor,
Connecticut. Ellsworth is considered by many to be an
important member of the miniature portrait painters community. Each
portrait contains a similar stylized chair and his signature cloud
serves to accent the sitter's profile. Most of Elleworth's work has
some color to enhance its sitters, but this example is unique as
only a single color was used to create the portrait. Presented in a
gold leaf frame of the period which measures 5.5 x 4 overall under
historic glass. c1835. Inventory number 23PD686.

United Cigars
advertising sign. Fresh from a Massachusetts collection, this
is one of the finest ad-signs we've had in a very long time. It
remains in excellent untouched original condition and if there's a
flaw, the letter "G" has an age crack which we feel may have been in
the making and not a later repair. Having said this, I would still
rate the sign a "10". Surrounding the sign is a gilded rope border
with corner rosettes giving it a final touch. Verso is information
about who the sign was made for and further identifying its maker
and original price. If you're looking for a fabulous sign to top off
your collections, look no further. This is a fine sign worthy of a
fine collection! Size: 36 x 21 x 1.5
