Description

A rare and perhaps unique hollow body copper beaver weathervane. The form is not often seen and finding this one from a private Maine collection was thrilling. It remains in excellent condition with no known repairs. The color and surface are very good and while I cannot associate it with a maker, I feel confident in saying it's from the early 1900s. Dimensions: 25" W, 21.5" T and about 3" thick. Included is a custom metal museum stand. I also feel the crosshatch embellishment done to the tail is worth mentioning. Inventory number 26-106.

An unusually smaller size, 19th century, hollow body gamecock weathervane. It measures 16 x 14 x 4 and remains in structurally sound condition with no known repairs or problems. We believe its present gold leaf surface is a second application done approximately 50-60 years ago and a close visual inspection supports that evaluation.
The price includes a custom metal stand which adds to its visual standing display. I further attribute the maker to be Fiske, New York. c1885. Inventory number 26-68.

$2850.

William Matthew Prior, American, 1806-1873, Bath, Maine. The lovely portrait of a woman painted on heavy card stock remains completely original including its frame and historic glass. Prior was a prolific portrait painter working mostly in Maine and later moving on to Boston. His portraits are highly sought after and can be found in important institutions and major collections throughout the United States. Look closely at this portrait, the details are superb. Size: 23 x 18 overall. Inventory number 26-89.

It measures only 9.5'' tall and wears a beautiful multi-color surface which we thought was extra special and attractive. Inventory number 25-721A.

Yellow Throat songbird by Jess Blackstone, 1909-1988, Concord, New Hampshire. Blackstone was a prolific carver along with his father Arthur Blacksone. Each carving was meticulously recorded in a journal identifying the name of the bird and the date it was carved. While I have never seen the journal, I know for certain it does exist. Not only is his carving highly skilled, his paint application is realistic and lifelike as well. The carving is signed with his signature logo. Size: 2.75 x 3.5 inches. Inventory number 25-753.

$1350.

A metal Swisher Owl. These metal owls were made by the Swisher and Soules Company, Decatur, Illinois, c1940 and were used by farmers to attract crows which were considered a nuisance. The farmer had the gun, the crows didn't and unfortunately the crows didn't fare so well. I love the bone dry red color and surface which adds much to its appeal. Size: 13.5" tall, 7" wide on a modern wood base. Note: The glass eyes are missing on one side. Inventory number 25-766.

A very naive watercolor portrait of a young girl in a puffy sleeve calico dress. She is depicted in a full frontal facial pose which was not commonly done in the 19th century. Also her hair is so typical of young girls in that time frame. She rests in her original frame under very wavy historic glass which we feel adds to the importance of any early work. She measures 9.5 x 11.5 overall. There is no known information about the sitter or the artist. Inventory number 26-77.

A very small half hull of a 19th century schooner yacht, named "America" dated 1851. I'm not sure of its age, but what it lacks in age, it more than makes up for in decorative appeal. It's mounted on a mahogany board which measures 13 x 6. Inventory number 26-113.

$295.

A very attractive painting of floral design by James H. Musto, American, 1928-2025, North Falmouth, Massachusetts. As an artist his creativity flourished not only in his paintings, but sculpture, architecture and interior and exterior designs. This wonderful impasto example exemplifies its unique floral theme and use of colors. As with everything we choose to buy, this painting found instant approval and favor. It measures 30 x 24 and was never framed. Inventory number 26-115.
