Description

A 19th century hollow body cow weathervane on a modern metal stand. I'm not certain of the maker, but it is unusual in this sense. The udders are fully visible on one side and only partially visible on the other. The color and surface are truly honest and supreme. It is my opinion there have been two surfaces applied over the years. One was its original gold leaf squares which are still slightly visible and the second being a coat of gold paint which is mostly weathered off in some places exposing the squares. It retains a very good color and surface. It seems to be untouched as I do not see any signs of repairs and it's structurally solid. Size: 24"wide, 15" tall and about 2" thick. Inventory number 25-686.

Rufus Porter, American, 1792-1884. Porter, born in Boxboro, Massachusetts and later moving to and working primarily in Maine. Porter's work is highly sought after and ranks high with sophisticated collectors and institutions.  The quality and details of his work are so well done, it almost compares to a photograph. This example of a young man rests in its original frame which measures 4.75 x 5.5 and remains in excellent condition. Inventory number 25-856.

A very early 19th century hand stitched wool bed rug or quilt. People I've asked say it's a bedrug while others say a quilt. Personally we are thinking bedrug, but whatever, it's beautifully created and remains in excellent condition considering age and use. Yes, there are some very minor moth holes, but nothing that distracts the eye. A meandering leafy vine completely surrounds the entire border with internal squares having multiple stars, birds, and leaves. Size: 68 x 60. Inventory number 25-822.

William Kennedy, 1817-1871, a 19th century American itinerant folk artist who concentrated his skill on individual and family portraits. Kennedy was active along the eastern seacoast working from Maine to as far south as Baltimore. His portraits are highly sought after and can be found in major collections and institutions all across America and while living in close proximity to William Matthew Prior in Boston, no evidence has been found that associates the two in what we now call the Prior Hamblin School.
This portrait, depicting a young girl, remains completely original and undisturbed except for the frame which is a modern addition. Size: 16.5 x 18.5. Inventory number 25-858.

$6500.

A very small, cast zinc and tin, optical trade sign. Unlike its larger kin, this was used in conjunction with a larger jewelers pocket watch trade sign hanging directly below it. This example may or may not have ever been painted with eyeball details and if it were, mother nature has long since washed it all away. Size: 23.5 x 5 inches. Inventory number 25-638.
